Senior / Staff Data Engineer

About Us
We are the API for the EDI platform connecting the world's supply chain. Any company that buys or sells products trades Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) data in an effort to streamline communication — exchanging transactions like purchase orders, invoices, shipment notices, and more. Orderful is turning a legacy industry on its head, making EDI data trading effortless.

Our API leverages modern technology that dramatically improves infrastructure for our customers. Enterprises connect once to our API and trade EDI transactions with their supply chain partners, leveraging Orderful's growing network of thousands of companies.

We're growing rapidly and continually looking for top-notch talent to join our team. Ideal candidates have a desire to be part of building something unique and important, with a strong curiosity to learn and grow.

The Role
We are looking for a Senior or Staff Data Engineer to establish and scale our data practice from its humble beginnings. This role is foundational — you'll shape how we leverage data to
drive business insights and product innovation, owning the design and implementation of Orderful's data infrastructure end-to-end.

As one of the first members of the data team, you'll work alongside engineers, product, and go-to-market teams to define data models, standardize pipelines, and introduce best practices in observability, governance, and data quality. Staff-level candidates will additionally be expected to set technical direction for the data function, influence cross-team architecture decisions, and mentor engineers across the org. This is a high-impact opportunity to build something that will influence how Orderful understands and optimizes its business for years to come.

About You
You're an experienced data engineer who thrives in greenfield environments and ambiguity. You take pride in crafting reliable, scalable, and elegant data pipelines that make complex data
simple to use. You have strong opinions about data architecture but remain pragmatic — shipping iteratively against a vision.
You're motivated by solving hard problems that directly impact customer experience and internal efficiency, and you're excited by Orderful's mission to modernize global supply chain connectivity.

What You'll Do
- Design and implement data infrastructure — Build and manage data pipelines, warehouses, and integrations that support analytics, monitoring, and business
intelligence needs
- Ensure data quality and observability — Implement robust validation, testing, and monitoring frameworks to guarantee reliable data
- Enable analytics and insights — Develop and maintain data models that power dashboards, experimentation, and KPI tracking
- Champion best practices — Drive data engineering standards, documentation, and mentorship as the practice grows
- (Staff) Set technical direction — Influence data architecture decisions across teams, define the long-term roadmap for Orderful's data platform, and serve as the go-to
technical leader for the data function

What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role in a data-intensive environment (Staff candidates typically bring 8+ years and a track record of technical leadership)
- Proven track record building scalable data pipelines using modern tools (e.g., dbt, Airflow, Dagster, Fivetran, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
- Proficiency in SQL and a programming language like Python or Scala
- Experience with data modeling, ETL/ELT design, and data warehousing best practices
- Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure-as-code principles
- Comfort working in startup or early-stage environments — setting foundations and processes where none exist
- Excellent communication skills; able to translate complex data concepts for non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have
- Familiarity with streaming or event-driven architectures (Kafka, Kinesis, etc.)
- Experience mentoring engineers or leading data platform initiatives across teams (especially relevant for Staff)
- Background in supply chain, logistics, or B2B SaaS data environments

What We Offer
- Competitive compensation and stock options
- U limited PTO
- Remote work with flexibility
- Lifestyle work-from-home benefit
- Health insurance (medical, dental, and life)
- Choice of equipment
- Opportunity to make a significant impact at a high-growth company
