Director of Engineering, Infra and Tools

About the Role

We are looking to bring on an Engineering Director to oversee our new Infrastructure & Tools tribe, with devops, internal tools, and developer tools squads (each having 1 Eng Manager, 5 Full-time Eng, and 2 Interns). Our existing devops squad builds and continually advances our cloud infrastructure, monitoring, and security. Our new internal tools squad will focus on building tools to increase the efficiency of our business teams. Our new developer tools squad will focus on building tools to increase developer productivity. A key component to this role initially will be to grow the internal tools and developer tools squads within the tribe.

Diving into more detail, as our Infrastructure & Tools Engineering Director you will:

    • Tactically oversee the technical execution of ambitious projects and across devops, internal tools, and developer tools squads
    • Manage squad engineering managers, providing coaching, helping resolve technical and non-technical challenges, and completing performance evaluation  
    • Oversee quarterly OKR planning in partnership with the product team, ensuring a healthy contribution of initiatives from engineers, rigorous prioritization, and OKR demand matches team capacity
    • Ensure appropriate distribution of projects and infrastructure among squads and have well-defined collaboration interfaces between eng teams (both intra-tribe and inter-tribe)
    • Collaborate closely with product and business teams to move quickly on key initiatives that deliver business value
    • Contribute to cross-eng architecture discussions and designs
    • Work with the squads to continually refine / improve agile practices and delivery
    • Work closely with the VP of Engineering and Talent Team to oversee / drive engineering hiring within the tribe, and be a decision maker for hiring
    • Demonstrate and instill our core company values of moving fast, thinking big, being data-driven, being an owner, same goal one team, and being open & transparent
    • Ensure our engineering teams are finding the right balance between building quickly and building sustainably (sufficient product & code quality, minimal productivity debt, following best practices, etc.)

    • Datadog and Opsgenie for logging, monitoring, and alerting
    • Postgres for storage and Redis for caching
    • Gitlab for version control and CI/CD
    • Python, Bash, and Docker for local development workflows and CI/CD jobs
    • Tens of containerized microservices running our application code, written in Python and/or JS (Node / React)

About You

    • On the IC side, you have been at least a Senior Software Engineer or Technical lead for 3+ years
    • On the people leadership side, you have formally managed a team for 3+ years, or have led a team of teams
    • You have been involved in hiring / interview processes, have been a hiring manager, and have played a key role in growing a team
    • You have the interest and technical capacity to oversee devops, internal tools, and dev tools
    • You have strong knowledge of modern web technologies / tools / microservices
    • You have strong familiarity with cloud infra / microservice orchestration
    • You have deep experience in at least one of: devops, internal tools, developer tools
    • You are comfortable working with business and product stakeholders, and have experience with project prioritization / OKR planning
    • You have been a technical lead or manager for shipping a product / major product feature / devops initiative / internal tool in an agile organization
    • You are highly motivated / passionate, interested in wearing multiple hats / continuous learning, and looking forward to working in a fast-paced startup environment with an emphasis on ultimately delivering business value
    • You are a positive / enthusiastic person who enjoys solving problems, not just identifying them
    • You are an empathetic leader who values team lead autonomy
