VP of Engineering

As the Vice President of Engineering, you will lead our R&D organization through a crucial inflection point in our company’s growth. We are looking for a strong communicator both within the Engineering Team and when collaborating with the broader organization. We are looking for someone to help build the Engineering Team through hiring, coaching, advocating for the team; raising concerns to your peers in the Leadership Team. You will have a clear vision of what the department needs to look like, and you will support and inspire the team on the path toward that vision. 

As a member of the Leadership Team, you will contribute to the long-term vision of the organization and guide the translation of that long-term vision into an executable strategy. You will be responsible for leading and building the R&D Organization. This means the delivery of stable, scalable and maintainable Enterprise SaaS products and cementing our culture of technical excellence as we grow beyond our scrappy startup roots. You will report directly to the CEO, and represent the interests of Engineering. You will lead the communication of our engineering strategy to the broader organization and external stakeholders, including the board and prospective investors. You will own the budgeting, cost allocation, and hiring roadmap of the technical organization and be accountable for continually communicating changes to the team as our growth demands iteration to our departmental design.

You will be accountable for building annual and quarterly plans, owning the performance and compensation review process for our Engineering teams, and developing our team leads and technical leaders. Your wealth of leadership experience will position you as an effective coach and mentor, with a specific focus on team leadership and people management skills. You will also be responsible for working with each functional leader and team lead in the technical organization to develop their planning, roadmapping, KPI development, and forecasting skills. You will build and maintain key expectations of leaders within your department and coach these leaders towards these expectations.

Supported by persistent Recruitment and People Operations functions, you will play a central role in the design of interview processes, recruiting strategies, and assume ownership of hiring decisions. Change is the only constant at a growing venture like ours, and as our business evolves, you will be accountable to adjust and adapt the department to ensure alignment with the business’ highest-level strategic priorities.

Thematic Responsibilities

    • Recruiting and Hiring: you will be responsible for developing a practice of consistently recruiting and hiring for the R&D organization.
    • Team Development: you will be responsible for designing a holistic team approach across mentorship, performance reviews, and compensation reviews.
    • Management of Functional Leads: You will be responsible for supporting functional leaders to run their teams effectively by coaching them through the development of functional roadmaps, budgets, and KPIs.
    • Organizational Design: You will own the design of the Engineering department and champion the iteration of the department’s design.
    • Planning and Prioritization: You will own the annual and quarterly planning process for the Engineering department including capacity estimates, resource allocation, budgeting and a hiring roadmap. You will update the organization on a monthly basis to communicate changes.
    • System Reliability: You will ensure that our products are working for our clients and that we are effectively triaging customer issues. You will be supported by  DevOps and Senior Engineers.
    • Tools and Software: You will select vendors, own the negotiation process and continually evaluate our vendor relationships.
    • SR&ED: You will collaborate with Product Management and functional leaders to ensure that our SR&ED claim process is accounted for throughout the year.
    • Communication with Stakeholders: You will build and maintain engineering department dashboards and roadmaps and communicate updates to the CEO, Leadership Team, broader company, and board.
    • Communication within the R&D org: set up and deliver best practices around 1:1’s, team meetings, functional meetings, and other ways of communicating with specific groups within R&D.
